As early as 1900, photographer George R. Lawrence created a huge camera. Unlike a pinhole camera that can be cleverly designed, this was a giant camera that truly looked like a camera. George Lawrence commissioned the Chicago & Alton to take the world's largest photograph ever, which measured 8 x 4.5 feet. The camera weighed 900 pounds, required 15 people to move and operate, and cost an astonishing $5000 (enough at the time to buy a large house).
