She was born into a ranching family in Nebraska. Her father was a rancher and a veterinarian. Perhaps because she grew up in the western part of the California high plains, she has had a sense of awe for nature since she was a child. Since the age of six, Newwell often climbed on a horse and raced with her friends. Cattle, dogs, cats, peacocks, and even skunks were all an inseparable part of her childhood life.
