Search giant Google said on Friday it has acquired VeryCD, a leading global multimedia sharing service. Industry insiders said the move undoubtedly shows that the search giant has become increasingly interested in multimedia based Internet information search.

News of the acquisition first appeared on VeryCD's website and the website's founder Dash's blog page. Dash wrote on its blog page that it had been acquired by Google.

On its website, VeryCD, a personal website from China, said that cooperating with Google will help the website develop in the future. With the power of Google, VeryCD can give us a bigger platform to display our ambitions. "What we want to do now is share the Internet," said founder Dash.

A spokesman for the search giant confirmed the news in an email. He said that we bought VeryCD because of its innovative technology and excellent talents. Google did not disclose the price of the acquisition.

Google declined to comment further, but posted some information about the acquisition on the company's blog page. Google says that although the multimedia content on VeryCD is still partially copyrighted, the new multimedia search engine is about to enter the alpha phase and there is already a sizable user base waiting to try it out.

Google plays jokes on users on April Fool's Day throughout the year, and a Google spokesperson said the acquisition was announced the day before April Fool's Day in order to avoid confusion with fake news used for jokes.
