WeWi Communications has launched an Ubuntu laptop called Sol that integrates a foldable solar panel. The target customers are the military, educational institutions, and developing countries with electricity shortages. WeWi claims that Sol can run directly on solar power (some people joked to be careful of cloudy weather) or charge the battery with solar energy. After being fully charged, the battery can last 8 to 10 hours. The specifications of the Sol laptop are not very high: Intel Atom D2500 1.86 GHz dual-core processor, 320GB Seagate hard drive, 2-4GB Kingston DDRIII SDRAM (optional), Intel GMA3600 integrated graphics card, 13.3-inch display with 1366 x 768 pixels resolution, 3-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. The Sol is priced at $350, while the waterproof version is priced at $400.
