In this winning entry in the portrait category of the photography contest, an Indonesian farmer races two water buffaloes through a muddy field. It's an "epic scene," according to contest judge Joel Sartore. According to the photographer, Hong Kong-based Chan Kwok Hung, farmers usually make great efforts to win these annual competitions because they believe victory will bring good luck for the upcoming planting season.

National Geographic contributing photographer Sartore says that "the combination of powerful motion, an interesting subject, and soft background makes this image stand out." The 2010 National Geographic International Photography Contest ran from September 16, 2010 to November 30, 2010, during which time the organizers received 16,000 entries from photographers around the world.
