The first portrait photograph in history was taken by Frenchman Louis Daguerre in 1839. However, using photographs to record the appearance of criminals did not begin to be widely used until 1880. According to the Encyclopedia of 19th Century Photography, this is because of the cost of photographs and some other issues, so the judicial system did not immediately adopt this system.
