A powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck central Japan this morning, killing at least five people and injuring more than 600 others. Since then, a series of aftershocks have rocked the region.
The earthquake occurred at 10:13 am local time this morning, the epicenter is located in Japan's Niigata Prefecture, the Sino-Vietnamese sea, focal depth of about 17 kilometers. It was followed by a series of aftershocks in the region, including one measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale at 3:37 p.m. Japan Meteorological Agency said the next week in the area may also be large aftershocks.
