Founded in 1947 by Silas Rhodes and Burne Hogarth, it was originally called the Cartoonists and Illustrators School until it was renamed in 1956. SVA is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD), a consortium composed of thirty-six leading art colleges in the United States.
