Search giant Google is about to launch a new mapping service called Riverview, according to people familiar with the matter. As with Google Street View, users can access River View through Google Maps to see the banks of all navigable rivers within the United States. To provide this service, Google sent ships to survey thousands of miles of riverbank lines. All of the boats are equipped with cameras, GPS locators and other equipment used in the Google Street View camera cars. The river-scene boats have been working in secret for several months and will soon end their mission.
