Google held a press conference earlier today to officially launch the feature, which now allows users to initiate phone calls directly from within Gmail.

Google has previously integrated text, voice, video in Gmail a variety of chat methods, and now the Internet phone function is also in the way of web plug-ins in Gmail began to serve users. The service is called "Call from Gmail" by Google.

Engadget has already started using it simply, charging $0.02 a minute for calls from San Francisco to Paris. If the other person is also using a web client, Gmail will pop up a new chat window when the call is connected. To make a call, the user can click the "Phone call" button, and a dialer will pop up at the top of the chat window. The user can manually enter or copy the number in the email to make a call.

Calls to landlines in the United States and Canada are currently free, and international calls cost $0.02 a minute. It is not currently supported for domestic use, but in the roadmap released by Google, the service will be provided for domestic users later.

Google Voice product manager Vincent Paquet has confirmed that some of the calls for the service come from the Gizmo5 team it acquired last year. In a comparison call between Skype and Gmail under the same conditions, Gmail was found to be better than Skype in terms of voice data compression and can provide clearer voice quality, but Skype's ambient noise reduction feature is not available in Gmail calls.
