The 2012 Google I/O Developer Conference opened today, during which Google released a spherical streaming media player named "Nexus Q," priced at $299 and set to launch in July.
According to the introduction on Google Play, Nexus Q is a "social streaming media player" that can achieve the "cloud playback" function for audio and video files but requires control via an Android device.
Simply put, if a user purchases a movie through Nexus Q on Google Play, this movie will be added to the Nexus Q playlist. As long as it's within the same WiFi network, any Android device can watch the movie through Nexus Q.
The Nexus Q uses Texas Instruments' OMAP 4460 chip, the same as Galaxy Nexus, runs on the Android 4.0 operating system, has a power consumption of 25W, supports WiFi, Bluetooth, and near-field communication, and is equipped with 1GB of memory.
Google stated that the Nexus Q will go on sale in July this year. Pre-orders have already begun, and the United States will be the first country where it will be launched. The price is set at $299.
Additionally, Google also introduced the Triad speaker companion for the Nexus Q player, priced at $399.99.
