Visopsys has been in development since 1997, and the latest version is 0.62, which is very small, about 5MB on optical disks and less than 700KB on floppy disks. And it's very fast, and it's open source software. It is small, but offers a full-featured graphical interface that supports real-time preemptive multitasking and virtual memory.
