Logitech has recently announced that it will acquire SightSpeed, a privately-held company based in Berkeley, California, for $30 million in cash. The main business of this company is web-based audio and video communications, and its namesake product, SightSpeed, is a free software that provides high-quality video chat functions.
The acquisition is expected to be completed early in November. With the acquisition of SightSpeed, Logitech will gain a pretty good video phone software along with its technical and service R&D team. Moreover, SightSpeed supports both PC and Mac platforms simultaneously. Therefore, Logitech can conveniently support cross-platform video chats in the future and may likely combine this software with its camera product line.
SightSpeed was founded in 2001 and currently has only 25 employees. Its SightSpeed service is based on the SIP protocol and can be easily integrated with other web services.
