Naturally occurring nuclear reactors in ancient Africa

The remains of nuclear reactors dating back almost 2 billion years were discovered in Africa in the 1970s. These nuclear reactions are thought to occur naturally. There is no natural nuclear reaction, because the concentration of fissile uranium is now too low to meet the needs of nuclear reactions. Pictured above is Mineral Nuclear Reactor No. 15, located in Okro, Gabon. Traces of uranium oxidation are visible in the pale yellow rock. Oklo's nuclear reactor derivatives are being used to determine the stability of fundamental constants on cosmic time and distance scales in order to develop more efficient methods for disposing of man-made nuclear waste.
