What is OpenID?

OpenID is a user-centric digital identity framework characterized by being open, decentralized, and free.

The creation of OpenID is based on the concept that we can authenticate the unique identity of a website through a URI (also known as a URL or web address). Similarly, this method can be used for user authentication. Since URIs are at the core of the entire network, they provide a broad and solid foundation for user identity authentication based on URIs.

The first part of the OpenID system is authentication - how to authenticate user identity through a URI. Currently, websites rely on usernames and passwords for login authentication, which means that users need to register a username and password for each site, even if they use the same password everywhere. If using OpenID (see specifications), your website address (URI) becomes your username, and your password is securely stored on an OpenID service site (you can either set up your own OpenID service site or choose a trusted OpenID service provider to complete registration).

Logging into a website that supports OpenID is very simple (even if it's your first time visiting the site). Just enter your registered OpenID username, and the site you're logging into will redirect you to your OpenID service site. After entering your password (or other required information) on your OpenID service site and passing the verification, you'll return to the site you were logging into, already successfully logged in. The OpenID system can be applied wherever authentication is needed, whether for single sign-on systems or for identity verification when sharing sensitive data.

In addition to registering once and accessing multiple sites, OpenID brings value to all websites that support OpenID - shared user resources. Users can clearly control which information can be shared, such as name, address, phone number, etc.

Today, OpenID, as a user-centric authentication system, has already served millions of users. Under the impetus of the "I Want My OpenID Bounty" project, many open-source projects have quickly added support for OpenID.
