Many people, especially those who struggled with English as children, have dreamed of the day when they could wear special glasses that would instantly translate all foreign text into Chinese before their eyes. How convenient it would be! We even saw a similar technology showcased in Japan's promotional video for their 2022 World Cup bid. It’s amazing to see how far technology has come, because such technology is now actually available.
Quest Visual recently launched a translation app called Word Lens on Apple's iOS App Store. Its functionality can only be described as magical. Simply point your phone's camera at the text you need translated, and by the time you can clearly see the screen content, the translation will already be complete, perfectly integrated into the original environment - an absolute "augmented reality" experience.
Word Lens uses a local dictionary, so no internet connection is required for translations. Currently, it only supports translation between English and Spanish. In terms of hardware, it supports the iPhone 4/3GS and the fourth-generation iPod touch. However, neither the iPhone 3GS nor the iPod touch support digital zoom or flash, and the iPod touch also lacks autofocus, so the best experience is only available on the iPhone 4.
The Word Lens software itself is free to download, but the English-Spanish and Spanish-English translation packages must be purchased separately, each costing $9.99 (half price at $4.99 until the end of the year). Even if you don't buy the translation package, you can still download the app and try out its interesting effects using the built-in trial module, which can display the text in reverse order or completely erase it in real-time.
