New Scientist reveals how the world's most powerful laser is produced

The National Ignition Facility is a key element of the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) inventory management program. Under controlled laboratory conditions, the National Ignition Facility will conduct fusion ignition and thermonuclear combustion experiments, the results of which will provide the NNSA with the means to experiment with relevant weapons production conditions. These conditions are critical to NNSA's work to assess and verify nuclear arsenals without conducting underground nuclear tests.
